B A C K G R O U N D & H I S T O R Y Riley is the older sister of Jung Soo-Yun (Valeria). She’s the oldest child of Ji-Soo and Min-Yun, who immigrated from South Korea before the girls were born, making Riley and Val the first generation of Americans in their family (their parents are very proud~).
Riley’s mother, Ji-Soo, was just your normal, every day witch who happened to fall in love with businessman Min-Yun. After Min-Yun asked for her hand in marriage, Ji-Soo felt guilty and told him about her family. He loved her for everything she was. The two were married and shortly after, they started a fairly lucrative shop thanks to Min-Yun’s talent for business and Ji-Soo’s ~magically wonderful~ herbal remedies. They decided to expand their business and try their hand in America, hoping to have better access to a larger variety of ingredients. Business plans failed though when Ji-Soo found herself pregnant with their first child, Ji-Yun. Min-Yun took an accounting job in a neighboring city while Ji-Soo stayed at home, teaching her daughter everything she could about potions and herbs. After giving birth to their second daughter, Soo-Yun, Ji-Soo worried about her girls. In the Jung family, magic passes down the maternal line, and only one female per new family is gifted with those powers. It had caused a tear between herself and her own sisters, so Ji-Soo was ecstatic when she saw both her girls showed early signs of magic - Riley with her aptitude for potions and healing others and Valeria with her uncanny gift with plants. Both girls’ powers were substantial and she encouraged them to study according to their interests.
The Jung family did not face much discrimination for their magical abilities (which they kept hidden pretty well before moving to Siren Cove), but the family did face quite a bit of racism while the girls were in elementary school, forcing Min-Yun to move his family to a less disgusting town. Riley herself did not experience much racism from her classmates, but she saw the way it was directed at her family, especially to Val, and picked up on the subtle way important people in the town would smile and act friendly as they casually threw out offensive and ignorant phrases. Though they faced an alarming amount of racism for the times, Riley and Val’s parents insisted on teaching their daughters their culture and language, often purposely having the whole family speak only in Korean when out in public. Moving from that town was the best thing to happen to the Jungs.
And moving to Siren Cove was a miracle. Min-Yun worked at another business just outside of town while Ji-Soo continued to be a stay-at-home mom, teaching her daughters every new thing she learned about the town. The new school system allowed the girls to flourish and open up more - well, as much as Riley would open up to people outside of her family. They could study and practice their powers freely and without fear - except a few times when that pesky Thornton family made snide remarks here and there. But the girls were much happier and thrived in the new town.
Min-Yun and Ji-Soo would’ve remained with their girls after they grew up and became young women, but Ji-Soo’s mother became very ill in the past few years, forcing the two to return home to Korea to look after her. Riley and Val had the option of staying in America or joining their parents. The two couldn’t imagine leaving Siren Cove, not just yet, and decided to move into a small two-bedroom cottage together.
After high school, Riley went on to college where she studied medicine and graduated with honours. Her interests in modern medicine have driven most of her goals in her adult life - she hopes to find creative ways to mix medicine and potions in order to help those who need it the most. She now works at Coombs & Co. with her friend and mentor, Moira, and works at Watersong as a bartender a few nights of the week.
P E R S O N A L I T Y Riley’s not a talker. She’s an observer. She takes in her surroundings constantly and will make comments on her notes usually only when asked. She doesn’t freely give her opinion unless she’s very comfortable with the other person she’s talking to - or hates them. She can be very blunt when she dislikes someone. To strangers and mere acquaintances, she can come off as cold, a complete opposite to her sister. When she becomes comfortable around others though, Riley is very kind-hearted and can be endearing when she allows herself to be.
While Riley is a calming element for her sister when Val gets angry or over-excited, she can be conniving and vengeful when anyone messes with Val. They are fiercely protective of each other. More often than not, Val is the one protecting Riley and Riley is the one calming Valeria’s easy temper down. A few times in her life, Riley has sought vengeance against those that hurt her sister, and she hasn’t regretted a single one of those times.
Riley puts a lot of pressure on herself. As the older sister and now only family of Val’s in America, she’s sort of appointed herself as her sister’s guardian, even though Val is a grown woman and more than capable of taking care of herself. While she wants to pursue her own interests, she also wants to make sure Val is always happy and pursuing hers, so she’ll help any way she can to make sure Val’s little flower shop stays afloat. Sometimes this involves slipping money into the register when Val isn’t looking (but Val knows her sister does this. She ends up paying it back to her in some shape or another).
O P I N I O N O F T H E R I V A L R Y
She’s not too involved in the whole thing and thinks the history of it was a bit extreme. She is, however, more sensitive to witch issues and prejudices. If she gets attitude for being a witch, she will remember it.

Riley now lives in a small cottage with her sister. While she studies more on her own and finds a job that better suits her interests, she works most of the week at the Watersong - she makes a mean mixed drink *insert winky face*. She’d love to help Val keep the flower shop organized, but she’s not allowed to touch the plants. Ever. She can’t even breathe on them. Riley doesn’t have her sister’s green thumb.
A B I L I T I E S & P O W E R S
Riley has a natural expertise for potions. She can almost pinpoint exactly what makes up a huge number of potions and will experiment with creating her own. Her true passion is to find a way of melding her potion prowess with her modern medical education. And with her sister’s ability to grow almost anything (or willingness to try her hand at it), Riley’s potion making stock is always fresh and of the best quality.
H E A D C A N O N S
- Riley's magic gets stronger when she connects with her sister Val.
- Loves to research/gain knowledge in any form.
- She is very feisty and protective of people she cares about (Jung family trait--Val is just as bad).
- Almost drowned when her family first moved to Siren Cove. She was rescued by Owen Phillips.
- She's a heavy sleeper and doesn't wake up easily with an alarm. She's usually woken up by Val spraying her face with water as she tends to her plants.
C U R R E N T S T O R Y L I N E S- Science Bros - For some unknown reason even to herself, Riley challenged Les to recreate her grandmother's mysterious and powerful health potion. To her surprise, she and Les figure out the missing piece of the puzzle and are able to recreate the potion perfectly, only by working together. They work well together, pushing each other. Their game of potion-making at the Middleton Masquerade Ball was proof of that--they may be a bit too competitive with each other though.
- A Mysterious Book - Several weeks ago while cleaning through the storage room of Coombs & Co., Riley found an old spell book. It's written in a different language and filled with potential information for new potions. Riley was excited to start translating the book, but the events in town over the past week have put the book on the back burner.
- Missing Elders - Riley and Val haven't heard from their parents in several weeks. They're in South Korea, taking care of their sick grandmother. Usually the girls hear from their parents every other day, once a week at a minimum. The girls are worried, especially with everything going on. Every point of contact hasn't been successful. Val is determined to learn to scry in order to locate them.
- Never Say Good-Bye, Hello - Tristan Bertrande was murdered. Riley witnessed the attack and had to be comforted by several friends. Finally it was Alfie who pulled her away from the man and got her home to her sister. Riley stayed in bed with Val for days, clinging to her sister and trying to process the concept of death, as she's never lost anyone close to her before. After Tristan's death, she inherited his cat and his business. She's currently working out how to turn Knights of the Round Pie into something she can run.
- Unwanted Relatives - At the ball thrown by Violet Coombs, Riley and Val learned that their she-witch of a cousin, Park Yura, was in town. They don't know why Yura is in Siren Cove or for how long, they just know they're in for trouble.
R E L A T I O N S H I P S
- Valeria Jung - Riley's little sister; she's very protective of Val and can't imagine life without her.
- Moira Coombs - Riley's best friend. She's known Moira since moving to Siren Cove and absolutely adores the woman. A few years ago, Moira became Riley's boss when she hired her to help take care of Coombs & Co., a job she loves.
- Lara Quinn - A close acquaintance not just to Riley, but her entire family. Riley has high respect for Lara and trusts her instincts and advice. She also works for Lara a few nights a week as a bartender at Watersong.
- Les Parker - Les always infuriated Riley. He never paid attention to her, but she noticed how he floated from job to job and never seemed to motivated to do anything other than eat. For some reason, she felt compelled to challenge him with her grandmother's healing potion. After he failed on his own, they teamed up and managed to solve the potion and Riley got a glance at just how powerful Les really was. She's now determined to continue challenging him and hopefully show Les what a competent and amazing witch he is, if he'd just motivate himself. She's not sure why she's now obsessed with helping him, but she definitely enjoys keeping him in check when he's used to batting his eyes and getting his way. And she did enjoy making the potion with him.
- Alfie Haywood - Riley met Alfie through Les when they worked together to figure out the healing potion. He's nice and seemed genuinely interested and her and Les' powers, instead of looking at them like they were freaks. She likes Alfie already and feels a tad protective of both he and Les. Plus, she loves his dog, Penny.
- Tristan Bertrande - Deceased. Riley's crush and first experience of death of a loved one. She inherited his business and his cat, Flavia.
- Lou Abasi - Lou has been a friend to the Jung girls for years, always inviting them to her brunches. Though Val is closer and Riley does still feel a tad uncomfortable at the brunches, Lou always manages to make her feel calm and comfortable.
- Bach Jones - Riley's still confused by this man. After first meeting him and learning from Lara that he is half-siren, she's not sure what to make of him. His extreme denial is impressive, but also pushes her patience just a bit. She was intimidated by him when they first met, the way he stepped into her bubble and spoke forwardly. After sitting with him for drinks though, Riley feels much more comfortable around Bach. He was relaxed and joking, not on the offensive at all. He seemed different that night.
- Spencer Waters - Riley's known Spencer for years, since she regularly visits Siren Cove's library for various things. She feels comfortable with him, and will trust him to always find the perfect book for whatever problem she has, but isn't sure how much he knows or even believes about Siren Cove. Surely, he knows everything--she bets he's read every book in the library, which includes a complete history of the town--it's whether he believes in any of it or not. He's perceptive, something she appreciates, and he always lets her duck into the library right at opening so she can start her research bright and early. She's recently asked him to help her figure out if Siren Cove has any underground or hidden places that aren't on the city's official maps. He's agreed to help, and seems more motivated by his past than the current situation--something she understands and she's definitely grateful for the help.
- Park Yura - SHE-BEAST! Riley's younger cousin and mortal enemy. Riley and Val know how manipulative and evil Yura is and want nothing to do with their cuz.
